A green oasis of peace and wilderness

Muvarnica is a forest in the northeastern part of the Park, covering an area of about 500 ha. During the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, it was a royal hunting ground, and King Alexander himself visited it and hunted there. In the times after, until the establishment of the Park, Muvarnica was exploited for industrial purposes and for firewood. Today, it is an area where numerous plant and animal species live, protected from human hands. The forests in the mountains are mainly combined with fir, beech, several types of pine, and sometimes birch and maple trees. These forests, as well as Muvarnica, are the habitats of many animals, wolves, brown bears, chamois, roe deer, foxes, wild cats, rabbits, martens, squirrels, various types of birds, etc. In addition to the Munich pine, newt amphibian, etc., there are about 250 endemic, sub-endemic and relict plant and animal species in the Park. In several places in the forest, there are various feeding grounds for herbivores and carnivores, as well as salt marshes, and hunting is strictly prohibited, as in the rest of the Park.
