GSS in BiH: Voluntary and professional organization for search and rescue

The Mountain Rescue Service of Bosnia and Herzegovina (GSSuBiH) is a voluntary, professional, humanitarian, and non-partisan organization of public character. It was founded and specializes in search and rescue activities in mountains, cliffs, caves, urban areas, as well as other inaccessible terrains and under severe weather conditions, requiring special expertise and the use of technical equipment to preserve human life, health, and property.

In addition to rescue operations and providing first aid to the injured in inaccessible areas, an important activity of GSSuBiH is education and implementation of preventive measures to improve safety and protection, aimed at preventing accidents in inaccessible terrains, especially mountaineering accidents. GSSuBiH ensures safety at ski resorts, takes care of safety during mountaineering expeditions, competitions, mountain bike races, sports climbing competitions, extreme races, and similar events, and is an active participant in the overall Civil Protection system of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The service consists of climbers, speleologists, high-mountain climbers, and skiers who are specially trained in all techniques of mountain rescue and first aid, including water and underwater rescues, helicopter rescues, and searches in inaccessible terrains with the help of search dogs. All members of GSSuBiH are voluntary members and do not receive any compensation for their work in the form of salaries.
