Discover the magic of Blidinje Nature Park: Natural and cultural blessings through history and legends

Blidinje Nature Park is home to a great richness of natural and cultural heritage, as well as a place of numerous fascinating stories and legends. The captivating landscapes of the entire Park have been attracting tourists from all over the world for years, and they, charmed by the sights of Blidinje’s surroundings, send some of the most beautiful photographs that can be taken in this part of Europe into the world.
Did you know that Blidinje Nature Park is home to the largest mountain lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina and, at the same time, another, smaller lake that is considered the highest-altitude lake in the entire country? Or that the Park has the highest cliff in the entire Balkans?
Many facts place this nature park among the best of the best, and the canyon of Dive Grabovica, with its depth of 1800 meters, is equal to the depth of the Grand Canyon. To visit the entire area and enjoy all that Blidinje Nature Park offers, it takes quite some time, but the position of its most beautiful parts allows all of them to be visited in about 2 hours. Right there, to the most beautiful parts of this Park, we will take you on an adventure that lasts for 120 minutes but will be remembered for a lifetime, and, ultimately, we are sure, you will want to experience it again.
In about two hours of adventure, passing by some of the most interesting and significant points in our Nature Park, you will have the opportunity to get to know the intriguing history of this area and, at the same time, its exceptional beauty.
This tourist tour is unique in that, while traveling through the beautiful nature and its landscapes, you are also traveling through five hundred years of history of this region.
The first such point, and at the same time, a meeting point with the guide, is the Blidinje Lake after which our Nature Park is named. The guide will acquaint you not only with the facts about the lake but also with the stories and legends related to its formation. The sound of the turbulent mountain water perfectly blends with the legends from past Blidinje times and, in perfect harmony, provides the best experience of staying by the Blidinje Lake. Up above the water, the peak of Čvrsnica called Jelinak will attract you to take the most beautiful photo from Blidinje Nature Park with the lake in the background.
Next, we go to Masna Luka to visit the church and monastery of St. Elijah the Thunderer, where you can also visit two interesting art galleries. Masna Luka is also known for its springs of drinking water, among which the most famous is the Jasle spring that we will visit, as well as being one of the largest habitats of the endemic Munika pine. This place is nestled amidst three beautiful peaks of Čvrsnica: Lisac, Jabuka, and Crveni Kuk, whose heights will enhance your entire passage through Masna Luka. The higher peaks of Čvrsnica above them will look like you are somewhere below the Himalayas.
As we exit Masna Luka to Dugo Polje, you can walk a little away from the vehicles and walk under the slopes of Vran Mountain, catching fresh mountain air. Through this walk, the guide will take you to the cave of Mijat Tomić and introduce you to the people who greatly marked this region – the hajduks, and, following their example, the Hajdučke Vrleti restaurant near the cave was named.
Next, the journey through history continues, just a few kilometers away, where we visit the stećak necropolis in Dugo Polje. These are medieval tombstones typical of this area. These 150 stećci, which have stood in Dugo Polje for centuries, have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2016 and are an ideal site to get to know the story of these silent witnesses of the medieval history of the Blidinje region up close.
After that, the journey through history does not end but continues just a few kilometers away, where we go to visit the grave of Diva Grabovčeva on Kedžara. Dive Grabovčeva is a girl who experienced her sad fate right here. Namely, she was killed at the end of the 17th century because she refused to marry a Turkish beg, whose people at the time ravaged, plundered, and tortured the Christian people in this area of the Balkans. Dive Grabovčeva still represents a symbol of resistance to force, injustice, and occupiers, and at the same time shows how much faith helped the local people to preserve their identity over the centuries and write their rich history in golden letters. Her entire story is fascinating, and the guide will make sure to acquaint you more closely with her life story.

Finally, returning from history to the present, we visit the Risovac Ski Center, a ski resort built on the slopes of Čvrsnica, which forms the heart of the winter tourist offer of Blidinje Nature Park. Here we have the opportunity to get to know the work and significance of this ski center, and this place offers us a great view of the Park.

Here we conclude this tour, and the guide bids you farewell, leaving you to continue enjoying the captivating landscape. The chirping of birds, the stories of the canopies of centuries-old forests, and the gentle mountain breeze will invite you to stay longer or come back again – once more!
