Tour description:

One of the peaks visible from Veliki Vran towards Tomislavgrad is easiest to hike via Velika Draga and Omrčenica. The largest and closest peak you’ll reach from that direction is Mali Vran. What makes it particularly special is the cave located near it, known as the Upper Cave of Mijat Tomić.

This trail can be tackled in both a longer and a shorter version. The longer version starts just 2 km from Blidinje Lake. For these 2 km, you need to drive towards Tomislavgrad from the lake and find the Via Dinarica sign directing you to Mali Vran. From there, a dirt road leads to Mali Vran, but it’s not in the best condition, so it’s better to start walking immediately. At one point, the marked trail veers off from the dirt road, leading you through the forest and past several private weekend cottages. This area is called Velika Draga, and the trail emerges onto Omrčenica, from which the shorter version starts.

The shorter version bypasses this entire section, but the dirt road to the starting point at Omrčenica is quite poor, so the longer version is recommended. At the point where both trails meet, the real hiking ascent to Mali Vran begins. The trail leads through sparsely populated pine and beech forests the entire time, and the view behind becomes more beautiful with every step. The trail is steep, so you gain a lot of height in a short time. Soon, you have Omrčenica below you like the palm of your hand, and there’s not much left to reach the summit. When you finally reach Mali Vran with the final steep ascent, it rewards you with phenomenal views in all directions. From Raduša, Tušnica, and Kamešnica to the west, all the way to Blidinje Lake, Čvrsnica, and the ridge towards Veliki Vran on the other side. The best thing is that Blidinje Lake is fully visible and seems very close, just like the massive Čvrsnica above it. From Mali Vran, you may see best how vast Vran actually is, to the left of its ridge, above the Blidinje Nature Park. All those smaller peaks that make up its middle remain unnoticed all the time because of the massive ridge visible from the Blidinje area. Only when you reach this peak will you realize how much of Vran Mountain still remains hidden and unexplored. You will immediately understand why this mountain was a refuge for outlaws in ancient times.

Once you reach Mali Vran, it’s highly recommended to visit Mijat’s upper cave. Just 20 minutes from this peak, on the left side of the trail continuing along the ridge, you’ll find this cave, whose opening reaches up to 3 meters high. It’s astonishing to see such a large cave at such a high altitude. Countless life stories of outlaws seeking refuge in this area have unfolded here. So it’s no wonder the cave bears the name of the folk hero and outlaw Mijat Tomić.

The descent back is not overly difficult, although the return to the starting point of this longer version is quite long. Once again, you can watch all those mountains to the west as the sun escapes and sets behind them. The entire trail is well maintained and marked, and it’s necessary to bring enough water as there are no water sources along the trail.
